How Do We Test The Health Of High Mast Light Poles
Every 5 years the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) requires all high mast light poles (hmlp's) on our nations highways be inspected. Most conventional inspections today consist of a manual visual inspection of the pole from the ground. The inspector may use a pair of binoculars to view the higher portions of the light pole and luminaries.
The inspector will make notes if they view any defects and take pictures. Bringing ancillary inspections like high mast light poles into the 21st century would require a more thorough inspection. There are many Nondestructive Testing methods that can help accomplish this but they are cumbersome, costly and can only be used once a defect has been identified or by renting a boom truck to get to the correct height.
Luckily, Infrastructure Preservation Corporation "IPC" has developed and
patented a robotic high mast light pole inspection service that can thoroughly inspect the pole, seams and luminaries with their patented robotic inspection unit.
IPCs HMLP "Pole Crawler" is the first of its kind and can inspect the entire high mast light pole including detailing the seams, luminaries and pole surface as well as hi-lighting any problem areas . Inspection results are preserved so that future inspections can compare deterioration progression over time. This means that problem areas can be reviewed to see if the damage has increased since the previous inspection and action can be taken to ensure the integrity of the hmlp.
The hmlp pole crawler travels via a wireless remote. The entire device and wheels are all padded and rubberized so that there can be no damage to the pole surface.
